1. Quality gate that lasts for years By Sarah Robinson on June 20, 2016 Verified Purchase
I absolutely love this gate! We purchased the same one about five years ago for the top of our stairs at our old house, when we sold our house we ended up leaving it behind. Well we are at a point that we needed a new gate for the stairs at our new house and after looking at a variety of gates we ended up purchasing this gate (again)! I love the sturdy design! It is also easy to unlatch one handed and smoothly locks into place. It is simple enough to use that my older kids (7 and 9) can easily open it, but complicated enough that a young child can not. One of my favorite features is that you can push on a specific 'tab' and completely detach the gate within a few seconds to store away if you don't need it all of the time. This gate does have to be attached to the wall with screws, but the quality is well worth the small holes in the walls. Our last one lasted us for 4 years and has been used the last year by the friends that bought our house and it STILL has lots of life left in it. Even though this gate is more expensive than some other ones, the quality is the best I've ever seen or used. 2. Beautiful and Works Great! By Madeline on February 20, 2018 Verified Purchase This baby gate is gorgeous! It looks just like the photo, and is very easy to open and close. It was a little bit more work to install than a standard baby gate, but it is so easy to “pass through” each time that it was worth it. No stepping or jumping over an janky gate. It is pricey, but it is sturdy and will not make your decor look like a kid zone. I will order a second one. 3. She has a beautiful old Persian rug & I have two tiny pee ... By JJS on December 12, 2015 Verified Purchase I bought this for the doorway to the bedroom of my 87yr old Mother who I recently moved into my home. She has a beautiful old Persian rug & I have two tiny pee pad trained Chihuahua's that will gladly use her rug as a potty. I had to find an sturdy modern gate that wasn't an eye sore to my decor. Most importantly, I needed a gate that had no bottom railing piece so my Mother had nothing to trip over. This gate is perfect in every way & worth every cent. Whether it's for a pet or child or as in my case, an elderly person....this gate is wonderful. Love love love it. 4. Great gate By Prince Charming & Snow White on August 3, 2014 Verified Purchase I purchased this gate for use at the top of my stairs to replace one that I had great difficulty opening. This opens much easier and is sturdy, while being much more aesthetically pleasing. A bit expensive for a gate, but the best I found. There is no piece at the bottom to potentially trip over like some I saw and it installed pretty easily. It seems well made and so far, I am very happy with the purchase. 5. Looks good, easy to install By Andysinnh on June 18, 2018 Verified Purchase If you have a pet who loves to chew on gates during their puppy stages, this gate is a godsend. Looks good, easy to install, strong, and (so far) chew proof. It's extremely strong and easy to open/close once installed. And while not inexpensive, the expression "you get what you pay for" is very appropriate here. 6. We absolutely love our new gate By DQ on March 18, 2015 Verified Purchase We absolutely love our new gate! It's beautiful and easy to install and use. And, everyone who enters our home can't stop talking about its durability and attractiveness. It fits perfectly with our decor and modern furnishings. It sells itself and I'm certain that you will be extremely satisfied because it has exceeded our expectations! 7. Nubi gate by munchkin By Star on July 20, 2013 Verified Purchase We purchased two other gates and the Nubi by munchkin has worked out great for us. We don't have to worry about tripping over the bottom part because almost all the gates are secured at the bottom. We were able to set it up right at the top of the first step of stairs to our home, that way she cannot reach the handle until our daughter is much older. Heck by the time she can reach it or figure out how to open it, she will be able to walk up the stairs. The Nubi is a wonderful product 8. I originally got the North States Supergate Tall Easy Swing and Lock Gate but had to return it By CCW on November 15, 2015 Verified Purchase I originally got the North States Supergate Tall Easy Swing and Lock Gate but had to return it: the latch would not hold. After installing the Munchkin gate, my son said that it was "one million times better" than the North States gate in every way. It was fairly straightforward to install (watching the video helps) and seems very sturdy. 9. Great. Better than the step over types By xbrx955 on May 3, 2014 Verified Purchase Great for the top of the steps. If you use the extenders it won't be as sturdy. The spacing between the locks when you extend are far apart so I had to use a couple zip ties to make sure it wouldn't slip. This is case specific to me though. I would recommend this without seeing it first. Good construction and nice looking. The plus is you can take it out of the mounts when you don't need it. 10. very pleased and would purchase again By SMC on December 8, 2013 Verified Purchase Beautiful gate with a classier & more modern look than the traditional baby gate... a bit on the expensive side though. I like that you can adjust the gate easily to fit over baseboards or surfaces that aren't the same width on the bottom as they are on top. Also, it is very easy to remove, it just slides out and the mounting bracket stays in place 11. Looks great and does the job, great purchase By Mikal Anderson on January 12, 2015 Verified Purchase Gate installed easily and securely. Make sure the screws are down flat in the track or it can be tricky to slide the rails in, aside from that it's pretty straight forward. Looks great in the house and has secured the top of our stairs just as we wanted it to. 12 Great gates. Bought two on Amazon By Veynberg on August 30, 2015 Verified Purchase Great gates. Bought two on Amazon. It only took few minutes to install, they are easy to operate and you can remove them easily from their mount. Since they are mounted on walls, there are no thresholds to trip over. 13. This gate is perfect! By Daphne D'Spain on April 17, 2013 Verified Purchase I will order another one for our baby room. This is perfect for the top or bottom of the stairs as there is not bottom piece to step over and the gate swings open in either direction. Well worth the$$. 14. Nice gate for small dogs.By Rita Beam on December 29, 2013 Verified Purchase Easy to install. Easy to use. Nice looking. I got this gate for my small dogs and it is perfect for them. The locking clips are small plastic pieces, not sure how they will hold up over time. Otherwise, well built and sturdy. Love it. 15. Super protection By Amber on January 19, 2013 Verified Purchase I looked at tons of reviews and websites to find the best gate for the top of my stairs. I had a hard finding something that would fit and be trusted to be safe. Some people say this is way too much money but for me I'm not putting a price on my child's safety http://bestbabygatesforstairs.com/

Baby gates are the first line of defense for keeping babies and toddlers out of areas that are not completely baby-safe.
If you live in a multi-story home, you will need gates as soon as your little one starts crawling around (or scooting), usually around 7-8 months. Carpeted stairs are more forgiving, but wooden stairs can be fairly treacherous, especially for babies wearing socks. Concrete stairs (found in stoops and some basements) are the most treacherous; a fall from these could result in serious head trauma—or worse. Block those suckers off like a crime scene. Essentially, there are two types of interior baby gates: hardware-mounted and pressure-mounted. Hardware-Mounted Hardware mounted gates are screwed securely into your wall, door frame, or banister/balustrade, and are the most secure of the two types. These gates should be used where it matters most (i.e., where you can not risk it falling over), such as the top of stairs and other high-risk areas. Advantages to hardware-mounted baby gates: Can support your baby’s weight without slipping; unlikely to be rammed/toppled by larger dogs No bottom threshold (typically) to trip over The only safe choice for the top of stairs Disadvantages: Cannot be taken down in a hurry (unless they have a quick release feature) Installation is more time consuming than for pressure-mounted gates Leave holes in walls/woodwork when removed Pressure-Mounted The vast majority of baby gates for stairs on the market are pressure (or tension) mounted. Much like a tension rod for your shower curtain, they are very easy to install. Advantages to pressure-mounted baby gates: Easy to set up and move from place to place Do not have to screw into your walls/banister (okay for bottom of stairs) Cheaper (usually) Larger selection Disadvantages: Can slip and fall under a weight of baby if not installed correctly Big dogs can bust through them Should not be used to divide areas with a height difference, like the top of stairs Certification Ideally, you should get a gate that is certified by the JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association). All the gates listed below are JPMA certified (except for Carlson). The standards for JPMA specify that the gate should be no less than 22 inches tall, that the distance between the bottom of the gate and the floor should be less than 3 inches (so there’s minimal risk of a head or neck getting stuck) etc., etc. Our favorite brands of baby gates include North States, Cardinal Gates, Evenflo, Safety 1st, Summer Infant, KidCo, Regalo, Carlson, Retract-A-Gate and Dreambaby. All things being equal, my favorite brand is North States. Avoid cheap imports from Alibaba and other discount stores. A few notes about pets… if you have a small pet that you do not want to keep out of gated areas, you can get a gate with a pet door that will allow small pets to pass through while keeping small humans out. I wish I could say the same for bigger dogs, but sadly, if your bigger dog could get through, then so could your baby. On the other hand, if you‘re trying to keep your pet out, make sure you choose a gate that is sturdy enough (i.e., hardware-mounted) so your dog doesn’t come busting through like the Kool-Aid man. Keep in mind that many cats (and dogs!) can jump pretty high, so look for an extra-tall gate, like the one below, if you have a jumper to contend with. Easy Step High-Guard Gate One last thing — if you have a dog that loves to chew, steer clear of wooden gates. Puppies and other chewers will eat these gates for breakfast. Buying Used There are many used baby gates available on Craigslist, local consignment stores, and such. Provided that the gate works properly, the big risk is that you won’t get all the parts and pieces that go with it (this is more of an issue with hardware-mounted gates that come with a bag of hardware and other accoutrements). However, if you are sure you have all the parts and the gate looks to be in good shape, there is no reason not to buy used. Measuring the Opening Most standard sized baby gates will fit securely in a “normal” sized doorway or hallway opening, which is generally 32″-36″ wide. There are many situations that require an extra-wide gate, especially in modern homes with open floor plans. For that, please see the section below on extra-wide gates, which go up to 60″-72″ wide. For large openings, consider using an open-ended accordion fold gate, like the one below from MidWest Pet. This gate has served us well over the years for cordoning off areas like Christmas trees, dangerous hearths, and most recently, keeping Alice (and our dog, for that matter) out of our dirt garden (we used two in that situation, about 35 linear feet). We also used this gate to make a fence off our bed after our dog had surgery so she was not tempted to jump up and re-injure herself (our pets are our kids too, right? Yes. Honestly, this gate has probably been the most useful one we have owned -The Best Baby Gates. REVIEW MUNCHKIN EASY-CLOSE VS AUTO-CLOSE SAFETY GATESFor those of you who want to know what the difference is between the Easy-Close and the Auto-Close gate, here is a review. I own both gates and have used them both on the top of the stairs. I bought them both for different reasons and they each serve their purpose wonderfully. (baby gates for stairs)I highly recommend both but there are some differences between the two that you may need to research before settling on one that will work for you.
EASY-CLOSE GATE: -To OPEN the Easy-Close gate, your thumb pushes the top button and the other fingers squeeze. - Very easy to open. My 5 year old can open the Easy-Close gate so it actually is pretty "easy". -To CLOSE the gate you must do the exact same thing as when you open it or else the gate will bounce back open. Even if you swing it closed it does not click into the fully locked position without you squeezing the handle and setting it into place again. (If you have an older child who can open the gate then they will also need to make sure to close it behind them or it'll just stay open). -This gate will stay wide open in whatever position you leave it which is great if you want it to (e.g. grandparent's house when the kids aren't around full-time, when you have a party, etc). The auto-close gate will not stay open. -Weight, style and overall bulk of both gates are similar. - Works well tension mounted on the top of the stairs. I was concerned about not hardware mounting this, especially at the top of the stairs but the tension is strong and both my husband and I can kick and pull the gate and it doesn't budge. The gate also includes hardware for mounting if you want to. - I have used the "KidCo Y-Spindles" for top of stair bannisters on one side and a wall on the other and it works just as well tension mounted. AUTO-CLOSE GATE: -To open the Auto-Close gate, your thumb slides a button on top of the gate, and unlike the easy-close gate, you must lift the entire door up and over a small plastic stopper on the bottom of the gate in order for it to open. - This is relatively easy to do and doesn't require much strength and more challenging for kids to maneuver. - I can easily lift the gate with a baby ora load of laundry in my arms on the top of the stairs without any trouble (I'm only 5'0'). - My 5 year old can slide the button but isn't tall enough or strong enough to do it while lifting the gate and probably won't be able to to until he's taller.) - If you want a gate that will keep both your big and little ones from going through then this will be a better/longer lasting choice for you than the Easy-Close gate. - No need to close this gate, it will swing closed behind you automatically. - When it slams shut it does make a loud bang noise but you can avoid this if you don't slam it or stop it just before it hits and close it quietly yourself. The Easy-Close gate is much quieter on its own but this one can be if you pay attention to it. -The auto-close feature is great for those of you who are concerned that you may forget to close the gate behind you. Convenient 1 step to open and close the gate. - If you want to keep the gate open more full time (e.g. house party, carrying things between rooms multiple times, etc) this may not be the gate for you. You'd have to prop it open somehow or tie it off with string to keep it from shutting on it's own. - Tension mounted on the top of the stairs works well and I'm paranoid about safety. Also comes with hardware mounting if you want. -Weight, style and overall bulk of both gates are similar. click read: MUNCHKIN EASY CLOSE METAL BABY GATE, WHITE Sturdy Construction, Quick Installation. The Regalo WideSpan Extra Wide Baby Gate is made with an all-steel construction and installs quickly.
